Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Collection System Supervisor and/or Lift Station Supervisor, Field Technicians monitor, operate, and maintain wastewater collection and treatment systems including SCADA, controls, generators, pumps, valves, grinder pumps, easement maintenance, and all other operations and maintenance activities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbents may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  1. Daily monitoring and operations of wastewater collection and treatment facilities
  2. Scheduled maintenance of lift station pumps, valves, controls, and equipment
  3. Scheduled maintenance of manholes, gravity collection lines, force mains, valves, and closed-circuit television and cleaning of line work
  4. Perform regular maintenance, cleaning, and repairs of treatment facilities
  5. Perform daily, monthly, and periodic testing of treatment facilities to maintain compliance with Missouri Department of Natural Resources state operating permits and regulations
  6. Perform meter readings
  7. Station upkeep, mowing of grass and access easements, fences, odor/corrosion control monitoring
  8. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) Testing
  9. Utilize confined space equipment as required
  10. Line break repairs
  11. Diagnose, repair, and/or replace grinder pumps
  12. Rebuild grinder pumps and maintain inventory for pump rebuilds
  13. Maintain grinder pump database
  14. Respond to and work to satisfy customer inquiries and/or complaints
  15. Emergency call response and on call duties
  16. Exercises and repairs valves in stations, collection system, and curb valves at residences
  17. Maintains backup generators
  18. Exercises generators and transfer switches
  19. Missouri One Call line locates
  20. Utilize assigned computer/phone applications for daily duties, assignments, work orders, and timekeeping
  21. Perform preconstruction meetings and inspections for connections to central sewer lines
  22. Attend and participate in training for various job skill requirements and jobsite safety
  23. Investigate, locate, and report findings of various tasks, GIS updates, and database information
  24. Perform and schedule regular maintenance on district-owned vehicles and equipment, including but not limited to the assigned work truck
  25. Operate heavy equipment in the operations, maintenance, and repair of collection and treatment systems
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Incumbents must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be capable of possessing the knowledge, skills, and abilities upon obtaining appropriate training.

  1. Ability to operate and maintain wastewater collection and treatment systems
  2. Ability to operate tank, pump, and boom trucks
  3. Ability to operate heavy equipment:
    1. Boom Truck
    2. Tractor
    3. Excavator, Track Loader, and Skid Steer
    4. Brush hog
    5. Sewer jetter machine
  4. Ability to use hand and power tools
  5. Safety training and certifications:
    1. Ability to work safely in all environments
    2. Use of safety gear including glasses, hearing, gloves, confined space equipment, and other equipment as necessary
    3. Excavation and trench safety
  6. Ability to properly use confined space equipment and procedures
  7. Ability to operate computers and read and interpret data:
    1. Computer/phone applications and software
    2. GIS Programs
    3. Microsoft Excel & Word
    4. GPS data collection
    5. Interpret information from O&M manuals, engineering drawings, and SCADA systems
Education, Experience & Certifications
  1. High school diploma or GED, and experience in construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, plumbing, electrical work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  2. Possess and maintain a valid Missouri Driver's license
  3. Possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver's license with tanker and air brake rating
  4. Possess or have the ability to obtain Missouri Department of Natural Resources Wastewater Operators Licensing (minimum level D)
  5. Possess or have the ability to obtain closed circuit television (CCTV) certifications as necessary
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, walk, twist, bend, hold and grip objects; reach with hands and arms to both below ground level and overhead; use hands to finger, handle or feel; talk and hear for extended periods of time. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, drag and/or move a minimum of sixty (60) pounds (over sixty (60) pound lifts require two-man lift or use of lifting device). Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, texture perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be inside and outside. Inside working conditions will primarily be a shop environment with regulated heating and air conditioning. While outdoors the employee is exposed to prevailing weather conditions. The noise level can be high requiring hearing protection. The employee will be issued a district-owned work truck for performing off-site duties, commuting to and from work, and handling emergency or on-call tasks.

Compensation

The hourly and yearly compensation range is outlined below.
